For the height of your barn door we recommend at least a 1 overlay.
How to determine size of barn door hardware.
For example if you have an 83 opening you would order at least an 84 barn door.
For example if you have a 30 opening you would order at least a 34 barn door.
Generally most standard barn doors are approximately 36 x 84 or 42 x 80 with enough extra lip to overlap most standard door frames 36 x 80 by an inch or so.
Take the above measurement of your door and double it.
Measure from outside to outside of casing molding.
Add 2 4 to this measurement so your barn door completely covers the entryway without drafts or slight openings.
In this example the total width is 38.
Measure the door opening add a few inches to this measurement about 6 inches or so depending on how much space you have and this will be the total door width.
To measure the size of the track you need.
Your door s width should be 2 to 3 inches wider than the door opening and 1 inch higher than the dimensions of your opening.
The door s height width thickness and weight will all play a factor in the hardware that it will require.
Measure across for the width and from the top of the casing molding to the floor for height.
Standard barn door sizes most barn door sizes fall anywhere between 36 wide on the shorter side by 96 tall on the longer side.
In this example the total height is 83.
If your doorway doesn t have a trim measure the width of the inside of the door frame from left to right.
For the door height we recommend measuring from the floor to the top of the casing.
All barn door hardware kits will have minimum and maximum requirements for each one of these size attributes so make sure that your door is compatible.

This will be the length of track you need at a minimum.

Measure from the outside of the casing to the outside of the casing for the door width.
If the doorway has moldings measure from outside edge to outside edge to determine the proper door width add about 4 to 6 inches to your measurement.
The barn door you choose needs to be slightly larger than the opening of the door frame it will cover.
